This is a small part of the desert mountains in Southern California, where Interstate 5 cuts through, between Valencia and Bakersfield. It is nicknamed "the grapevine", as it twists and dips around great, jagged peaks. It is a country of extremes -- extreme heat, but where the Santa Clarita River runs, it is a cool oasis, filled with cottonwoods and willows -- where an earthquake fault-line has created a band of cliffs that in turn determined the coarse of the river.
